Direct Support Employees
Here are some of the positions at Mary Centre and the qualifications required:
The role of the direct support employee is critical to the well-being, health and safety of the people they support in our community-based homes or supported independent living apartments. Our full- and part-time direct support employees assist with daily living and participation in social, recreational and work activities.
Qualifications:
• Developmental Services Worker (DSW) or Social Services Worker (SSW) diploma
• CPR and first aid training certificate
• Crisis prevention training certificate
• Three (3) to five (5) years of experience working with people who have developmental disabilities
• Clear vulnerable person police check
We also have Community Support Employees who provide support and guidance to adults with a developmental disability who either live at home with their families or in the community with a caregiver. Other Direct Support positions facilitate the development of independence skills and competencies to enable people to fulfill their goals. Although sensory, visual or auditory impairments among aging persons with a developmental disability are similar to those in the general population, the degree of impairment may be more severe due to pre-existing problems. They may also experience more severe loss of body flexibility and may be prone to developing arthritis at a younger age.
